It’s National Orthodontic Health Month + I’m Sharing My Story

October is National Orthodontic Health Month and, well, a (albeit random) celebratory month seems like as good an opportunity as any to fill you in on my path to a picture perfect smile…

Call it ‘mind over matter’ or just plain stubbornness, but I was dead set on keeping my wisdom teeth (mostly because of an intense fear of teeth pulling, but that’s fodder for a different post!) – and eventually my dentist conceded that yes, my wisdom teeth were growing in properly and yes, I seemingly had enough room for them.

What he didn’t tell me, though, was that while I theoretically had the space for 4 more choppers, that their eruption in my mouth would force my other teeth to move around in order to accommodate their arrival.

Sure, this likely would have been avoided had I any idea where my retainer disappeared to, oh, about a decade prior, but the fact is that while I tossed that retainer eons ago in the hopes of saving face, my plan backfired when, fast-forward to 2009, I started hosting TV segments and noticed that my once straight smile was anything but.

Metal braces to correct my smile were out of the question!

There was no way I was going through the physical pain (ugh, memories of using wax to avoid a slasher film from occurring in my mouth came rushing back) or dealing with the social stigma of a mouth full of metal. And if you know me at all (which you likely do if you’ve been reading TheBeautyBean for a while!), you know that I hate food rules, so I was most definitely not apt for a mouthful of metal that would prevent me from eating whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted.

Invisalign® clear aligners were a lifesaver (full disclosure: Invisalign is a partner of mine)!

Over the course of about 18 months, I wore my practically invisible Invisalign clear aligners day and night (removing them to eat, of course), without anyone even knowing I was in treatment. Every 2 weeks I upgraded to new clear aligners, on a schedule my orthodontist planned out for me, and watched as my smile was transformed. I was thrilled with the results! I could still do (and eat!) anything I wanted and once I got used to wearing them (which took a week or two), I barely even felt them in my mouth. The best part, though, was that I was still able to host TV segments (and take loads of selfies!) without anyone even knowing I was on the path toward a more beautiful smile and increased confidence.

Straight teeth, though, are more than just about vanity.

Sure, a picture-perfect smile can boost your confidence, leave you smiling more often, and even increase your overall happiness (and not just because you’re happier with your appearance but also because studies show that smiling actually makes you happier!), but straight teeth are also essential for dental health.

Crowded teeth don’t just look less than ideal, they are also more difficult to clean properly, can lead to inflamed gums, and can even leave you with tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath – and many studies show that dental health is highly correlated with overall health, making this especially important.

Whether you’re self-conscious about your smile or looking to improve your dental health, regardless of your age, Invisalign clear aligners can improve how you look and also have a positive impact on your health. Plus, they’re sure to have a positive impact on your confidence: no more hiding your smile or feeling less than fabulous!
