Real Housewives of NYC fans are, we’re sure, already well acquainted with all things Alex McCord.  It is, after all, through reality TV that we most effectively tap into our voyeuristic tendencies (for better or worse). Alex, though, for those of you who are less familiar with the Brooklyn mom’s life, is much more than just a reality TV superstar. Rather, the former graphic designer and co-author (with her husband, Simon van Kempen,) of parenting memoir Little Kids, Big City, is, first and foremost, a mother and aspiring role model – and that’s something we can appreciate.

What do you think makes someone beautiful?
Beauty is the light in someone’s eyes, the unguarded giggle, the tired but happy sigh at the end of the day.

How do you deal with the pressure for body perfection in our culture?
Don’t let that pressure get to you.  That said, I didn’t workout for over 5 years after my oldest son’s birth and only do now because I’m in front of cameras.  Women (or men for that matter) should never buy into someone else’s idea of what they should look like; that’s giving away your power.

If you could give your younger self advice about beauty, what would it be?
Changing what you put into your body really can change the quality of your skin.  It took me until I was over 30 to give up soda and fast food, and I noticed a HUGE difference.

What is  your one, can’t-live-without-it beauty product?
