You may not be familiar with her name, but you’ve certainly seen her face. On the pages of magazines from Glamour to Marie Claire, in catalogues from Victoria’s Secret to Macy’s and as one of the faces of the High Street Retailer, Next, the 5’11” fashion model is nothing short of gorgeous – with a body we’re sure many of you envy. What we love about Amy Hixon, though, (even more than her killer looks, which, we admit, are undeniable,) are her thoughts on real beauty. She understands that health, wellness, beauty and happiness are neither determined by nor indicative of one’s weight.  Rather, she focuses on eating well and being active because of how they make her feel. She also makes a DIY exfoliating scrub (see below) that we want to try ASAP – and if you can teach a beauty editor a new beauty trick, you’re instantly a keeper in our book!

So, we sat down with Amy Hixson and asked her to weigh in on real beauty.

What do you think makes someone beautiful?
I think a person’s skin can make them look very beautiful and anything on top of that skin should only enhance it.

How do you deal with the pressure for body perfection in our culture?
I’d say “call up my parents, they made this body.” I think people should always strive to be their healthiest but that doesn’t necessarily pertain to someone’s weight. Smart choices in what you put into your body and being an active person will make you feel better, but how your body reacts is different for each person and starts deep down in your genes.

Could your food choices be affecting your mood?

If you could give your younger self advice about beauty, what would it be?
I would advise my younger self to recheck in the mirror for that foundation line around my neck and that wearing glitter is not appropriate for every situation… pictures do not lie!

What’s your one, can’t-live-without-it beauty product?
Oh, definitely Cetaphil face wash. Every morning and night. And, once a week, mix equal amounts of Cetaphil and baking soda for an amazing exfoliant!
