Gretchen Rossi gained instant star status when she joined the cast of Bravo’s hit reality series The Real Housewives of Orange County. The blonde bombshell’s outgoing personality and easygoing persona quickly made her a fan favorite. As a strong, ambitious, California girl, however, Gretchen set her goals far beyond television fame. She recently launched the Gretchen Christine Beaute make-up line, a dream that became a reality for Rossi in 2009. The nationally successful cosmetic line continues to sell out across the country. Also in 2009, Gretchen jumped into the recording studio where she recorded her first single, Nothing Without You, in memory of her late fiancé, Jeff. As an aspiring writer, Gretchen plans to continue in music, where she finds herself most expressive. In 2010, US Weekly named Rossi “Hottest Housewife,” and, well, we don’t disagree.

We sat down with Gretchen Rossi and asked her to weigh in on Real Beauty.

What do you think makes someone beautiful?
I have come across so many beautiful people in the business, but I truly believe beauty starts from within. I have met so many gorgeous individuals that were not good people and had an ugly inner soul; therefore they no longer were beautiful to me. I also believe that confidence is what makes a person look and feel beautiful.  It shouldn’t matter what others think about your beauty or your style, it really is about the person you are on the inside; that will overflow to the outside. I think inner beauty is so much more beautiful than outer beauty.   Looks fade but your personality and how you treat people will always remain consistent.

How to beautify from the inside, out!

When do you feel most beautiful?
Don’t get me wrong I love to play dress up and have cute shoes, great hair and make-up and fun clothes on, and I feel great and beautiful then; but I feel most beautiful when I am laying in bed at night or in the morning with no make-up on completely vulnerable and my sweet boyfriend Slade tells me how beautiful I am. It means the world to me because no matter what I know he loves me for me!

How do you deal with the pressure for body perfection in our culture?
It is very tough some days. I come from a place of having an eating disorder and therefore I have always had body perfection issues. However I find that the more I learn to live in moderation with everything the better I am! I am so much happier, confident, strong and centered when I don’t go on a crash diet or beat myself up for having a little extra dessert or food that day! Some days I am just hungrier…period, I have learned to allow myself that break. I don’t deprive myself of anything.  I taste everything! I also find myself not pushing to do an hour of exercise every day. I get worn out from putting that stress on myself.  Instead I just do little things all day long. For instance I will have 5-10 pound weights around the house and when I go to watch TV I grab the weights and do sets of bicep curls. When I am drying from my airbrush tanning in my bedroom I do a set of sit-ups on the floor or some arm and leg exercises!  I find easy ways to incorporate exercises into my daily routine instead of having to find time for the exercise; it makes my life so much less stressful.

If you could give your younger self advice about beauty, what would it be?
Wow! So many things! First of all just to enjoy my younger years more and not stress so much about my looks and weight! Second I should have had my eyebrows tinted a lot earlier (since I am a real blonde they were really light and didn’t give me any frame to my face) and I never should of worn the colors I did on my eyes or that horrible dark lip liner I always wore!

What’s your one, can’t-live-without-it beauty product?
I would say Mascara! I love my curling lash mascara from my line, Gretchen Christine Beaute, because it enhances my eyes so well and helps plump up my lashes!  I think mascara brightens your eyes and makes you look more awake even when you don’t have any other make-up on!

Who is your beauty role model?
Well that is a tough one because I really do have so many beauty role models. I sincerely look up to the women who embrace their natural beauty. For instance women like Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts and Reese Witherspoon. If I had to choose one person I would say my mother is my ultimate beauty role model. She is a gorgeous 59 yr old woman who takes pride in her age. She dresses her age, acts her age and isn’t trying to act younger, and she has never had any surgery, Botox or injections and looks amazing! She is proud of every wrinkle on her face because she says it tells the story of her life.  More than anything she has always taught me that in a world that is beauty obsessed, inner beauty is the most well respected and appreciated beauty of all. This is why I consider my mom one of the most beautiful people I have ever known!
