While Kate Walsh barely needs an introduction (you likely know her as Dr. Addison Montgomery on Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice), she is a Real Beauty for considerably more than her acting chops – although those are undeniably impressive! Rather, Kate Walsh is a Real Beauty because of all that she is and all that she embodies. She’s not only a talented actress, but also a brilliant entrepreneur (she launched Boyfriend, her sultry fragrance, all on her own – rather than in a hands-off licensing deal like most celebs) and an ideal role model. She is funny, kind and gorgeous both inside and out – and trust us when we say that she is arguably the nicest and most humble celebrity we’ve ever met. And well, that killer auburn hair never hurt anyone either!

We sat down with Kate Walsh and asked her to weigh in on Real Beauty…

What do you think makes somebody beautiful?
Jeez, I think a sense of joy or when people are having fun. I tend to feel a lot prettier when I’m having fun. Confidence! Having fun is a big one!

Being in the spotlight, you obviously deal with a lot of pressure for body perfection in magazines to all the tabloid images – how do you deal with that?
You know, I would lie if I said I was never affected by what I see in magazines and that kind of pressure, but I sort of gave up on this idea of perfection a long time ago. Also, I wasn’t raised that way. As a kid, when I was in school and in plays growing up, If my parents pushed me to do anything, it was just to express myself and be creative – I was really fortunate in that way. There was never a goal of “I need to be perfect and look perfect.” For me, that wasn’t in my family. It’s definitely easier for me to have that sensibility and that sort of inner strength. I definitely have my own issues with food and body image like every woman, I think. The good news about getting older, though, is that you become more accepting of yourself. And I never set out to be a Maxim girl, like that’s just not me… I guess that’s my answer.

If you could give one tip to girls struggling with those same body image concerns – what would it be?
You know, I can tell you what I do personally, which is first of all: I’m really fortunate because I have a life and I work all the time so I have a trainer that I get to work out with and not everybody gets to do that. I tend to eat what I want and manage my portions. I don’t go out of control, with having huge portions, I try to just do everything in moderation, because I could never diet. I can’t deny myself – I feel like I just can’t do that. So I think staying away from extremes and just doing everything in moderation- exercise, eat right, let yourself have treats, and then get a lot of sleep and have fun.

Who are your beauty role models?
Jeez, I don’t know! Oh! Well I think Helen Mirren – I’m trying to think of ladies that are older than me! So, Helen Mirren, Meryl Streep, Susan Sarandon – I’m thinking of actresses, but you know, Michelle Obama– I’d put her on the list, like she looks pretty great and is like one hot gal. So yeah!

So, what’s your favorite beauty product, other than, obviously, your amazing Boyfriend perfume?
I really love – I always give them a shoutout because I use her products – Kate Somerville products – I am obsessed. She’s got a really high quality skincare line and I love them all. So, that’s it. That’s what I would say.
