As the former host of CBS’s The Insider and current anchor of ABC’s Good Morning America, Lara Spencer knows all too well the pressure placed on women, especially in Hollywood, to portray a certain ideal of beauty – she, however, is not conceding that it’s the only way. Rather, in celebrating her age, looks and figure – and those of the beautiful women of all shapes and sizes that she works with daily – the TV host and red carpet staple has found comfort in her own skin in a way that we can only hope others can emulate.

So, we sat down with Lara Spencer and asked her to weigh in on real beauty.

What do you think makes someone beautiful?
I really define beauty as inner peace and happiness. It’s taken a long time.  I just turned forty and I really think I get it now. I finally get it. And I feel really comfortable in my own skin. And I’ve never felt more beautiful, you know, smile lines and all. It really comes from within. And feeling confident and comfortable in your own skin. And not worrying about what other people think and being able to look in the mirror and think, “You’re OK kid.”

How do you deal with the pressure for body perfection in our culture?
I think that if you don’t have a strong constitution, it can affect you and that worries me for my daughter and for young girls, because it’s so pervasive. I think that beauty comes in every size, shape and form. I work with Niecy Nash who celebrates thickness every day and told me to celebrate my booty that I always wrapped in a towel at the beach, that, you know, is round. I thought beauty was having, you know, no curves and being a beanpole. And that’s just boring. And BTW ladies: guys don’t like that.

If you could give your younger self advice about beauty, what would it be?
I wish I would have appreciated myself for the differences between me and the so-called “popular girls.” The “mean girls” were petite and brunette and cheerleaders. And I was tall and I had no boobs and I’m super athletic – and that wasn’t necessarily what was cool in high school. But I wouldn’t change it for the world today.

What’s your one, can’t-live-without-it beauty product?
A great moisturizer.  I cannot start my day, or finish it, without a really rich, terrific moisturizer. I’m obsessed with Olay. They have this new moisturizer that’s not expensive, it’s for the masses, and it makes you feel great, and it’s SPF 30. And SPF, SPF, SPF all the way. I look at my mom, who was such a beauty, but wasn’t given the information that we have today about the sun, and it does take a toll. I can’t say it enough: there’s nothing sexy about leathery skin.
