While best known for her starring roles as Selena Gomez’s mother on the award-winning series Wizards of Waverly Place and as Demi Levato’s mother in Disney’s Camp Rock movies, Maria Canals-Barrera is oh so much more than a hip TV mom. Rather, the actress (who recently finished filming the feature film comedy, Larry Crowne, with Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts,) is also the real-life mom of two young daughters – Bridget, 6 and Maddie, 4. Straddling her roles as a TV mom and real-life mom, Maria Canals-Barrera brings a unique perspective to the Real Beauty conversation given her deep understanding of the pressures on women and girls everywhere from Hollywood to mommy-hood to the neighborhood.
So, we sat down with Maria Canals-Barrera and asked her to weigh in on Real Beauty.

How do you deal with the pressure for body perfection in our culture?
I accept our differences and love to see confidence in women who are of all shapes. It’s encouraging for us all. Do you know my mom never complained about her body? I think that spoke to me about loving and accepting what we’ve got.
If you could give your younger self advice about beauty, what would it be?
If I could give my younger self beauty advice, it would be about hair! “Get a great deep conditioner, girl, and a flattening iron!” I have big hair! Always have. Thick, wavy and a ton of it. Only recently have I been able to control it!
What’s your one, can’t-live-without-it beauty product?
Fave product I couldn’t live without? Concealer! Touche Eclat by YSL ($40) – a little under the eyes and you look instantly rested. You look like you’ve had a great night’s sleep when really you’ve only slept 4 hours!
