For all of you who haven’t turned on Lifetime since Molly Ringwald ruled the roost: it’s about time you reconsider – and not just because of the hot series, Army Wives, that everyone’s been taking about since its 2007 premier (the largest series premiere in Lifetime’s 23-year history!). Rather, we’re tuning in for a peak at Sally Pressman, The Beauty Bean’s Real Beauty!
As a classically trained ballerina with a Bachelor of the Arts degree in theater from Yale, Sally seemed destined for the spotlight. Yet it wasn’t until 2006, with the release of an independent horror film, that Sally’s carreer really began to flourish. But flourish it has! With her role playing Roxy LeBlanc on Army Wives, Sally has taken hold of our hearts (and our evenings)! Even if you’re not an Army Wives fan, though, we trust that her perspective on Real Beauty will win you over – especially her honesty about the pressure for body perfection!
So, we sat down with Sally Pressman and asked her to weigh in on Real Beauty.
What do you think makes someone beautiful?
Confidence. Other things are just subjective. But when a person feels great in their own skin…there’s nothing in a bottle that can top that.
How do you deal with the pressure for body perfection in our culture?
Well, I’m sad to say that sometimes I can’t. But on my good days, which are becoming more often than not, I always think that there isn’t only one perfect body. There are millions of types of bodies out there. No one type is “right.” And in addition, a person’s body does not represent the whole package. Sense of humor, intellect, kindness, curiosity, and generosity are all examples of important qualities that make up a person. And I think they are much more important than whether you are a size 0.
If you could give your younger self advice about beauty, what would it be?
SUN TAN LOTION!!!! And then I would tell her to love herself. Because the problems you think you have at a young age are laughable. You think your thighs are a little big? Wait until they have cellulite on them, kid. Be grateful of the amazing things your body can do when you’re younger; marvel at THAT, instead of how it looks in comparison to your 6 foot tall best friend.
What’s your one, can’t-live-without-it beauty product?
Oh boy, I am a beauty product addict. But my must haves at all times are Kate Somerville Gentle Daily Wash ($32), followed by her Deep Tissue Repair Cream ($500). One-two punch. Perfect skin is the most beautiful thing you can do for yourself.
