In 2003, Susie Castillo became the third Latina ever to win the Miss USA Pageant and, shortly thereafter, was named one of the “25 Most Beautiful People” by People en Espanol as well as one of Maxim’s Hot 100. But it’s not her gorgeous looks that have us swooning over this Puerto Rican and Dominican beauty. Rather, it’s the work Susie’s doing that makes her a Real Beauty. She is a co-host and designer on NBC’s School Pride (where she uses her Interior Architecture and Design degree to help improve neglected public schools and empower communities) and the author of, Confidence is Queen: The Four Keys to Ultimate Beauty through Positive Thinking – both missions that clearly speak to the backbone of The Beauty Bean.

We sat down with Susie Castillo and asked her to weigh in on Real Beauty

What do you think makes someone beautiful?
I think the word “beautiful” has nothing to do with the exterior of a person and everything do to with their heart. I think what makes someone beautiful is their passion for both their life and the life of others. Loving yourself and who you are as a human being and living by the “golden rule” and caring about others is what makes someone beautiful to me.

How do you deal with the pressure for body perfection in our culture?
I try my best not to focus on those things and focus more on just being healthy. We all know that nothing is perfect so I don’t believe there’s such a thing as “body perfection”. Honestly, what helps tremendously with feeling pressure of any kind is educating yourself and focusing on a healthy lifestyle where you eat the way nature intended us to. I learned five years ago from my nutritionist, Natalia Rose ( that when you eat well and treat your body like the temple that it is, it rewards you with beautiful skin, a lean figure, great hair, etc. and you don’t have to work out every single day! Works for me!

If you could give your younger self advice about beauty, what would it be?
To start eating organic/whole foods that help cleanse your body and rid it of toxins and stop eating dairy and processed nasty food. With a combination of using Neutrogena’s Skin ID products and eating well, I cured the breakouts I was having last year! You really are what you eat. I am so passionate about health and nutrition that I even started a blog on my site.

What is your one, can’t-live-without-it beauty product?
I love my Neutrogena Healthy Volume Mascara! Sometimes I won’t wear any makeup except this, a little blush and lip moisturizer.

Julianne Hough talks about dealing with breakouts too!
