Julianne Hough swept millions of fans off their feet on ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” – and as Ryan Seacrest’s girlfriend (but that’s fodder for a whole different article). And while she certainly has the dancing chops (she not only won “Dancing with the Stars” twice but also earned an Emmy nomination in 2008 for Best Choreography for her work on the show and has even collaborated with Gwen Stefani on her Wind It Up video.), it is actually a career in country music that has always been Julianne’s dream – and she’s living it. Her self-titled debut album hit the Billboard Country charts at #1, marking the highest debut for a country artist since 2006! As if that weren’t enough, though, Julianne was also cast in the star-studded ensemble of Burlesque as well as as the female lead in Paramount’s remake of Footloose, which is expected to premiere in October. Oh, and she has workout videos, a gig as an international spokesperson for Proactiv Solution and is active in numerous philanthropic endeavors, making her a quadruple threat, we guess, if not more! Bottom line: she’s a Real Beauty!
We sat down with Julianne Hough and asked her to weigh in on Real Beauty
What do you think makes someone beautiful?
Beauty I think comes from within – I think that how you were raised, no matter what size, what color hair, anything – acne, no acne – it comes from within and if you’re confident on the outside and have a great personality and really love who you are internally, then that’s what’s beautiful.
When do you feel most beautiful?
I feel the most beautiful when I, well – obviously there are two different answers to that. The first one would be that I love to get glammed up and you know feel that my hair looks great, and my skin looks good and when my legs are shaved and I’m wearing high heels – and all that stuff. But also when I’m around my family and stuff, and they’re just fun to be around and there’s just a certain glow you have when you’re with your loved ones.
How do you deal with the pressure for body perfection in our culture?
Oh it sucks ass – I’m telling you that! Oh, sorry! But it does. It’s hard. You know, as a person you’re always saying “oh, it doesn’t bother me. I’m going to be who I am and that’s all that matters.” But, at the same time, you obviously want to be the best looking that you can be – in the best shape – but you have to keep reminding yourself that it’s about health and fitness and feeling good about yourself, rather than how skinny you are because that can sometimes not be healthy – at all!
What do you do to be in your best shape?
Dancing! Yes! Dancing a lot! And when I don’t dance – or I get bored with that – I’ll go on a hike or swim or the Tracy Anderson Method – I’ve done that a couple time and it’s really great because it’s kinda like dancing, and it’s different every time so it’s fun.
You’ve been so open about your skin problems. How did that affect your self confidence?
Oh my gosh. It was horrible. You know, again, you try to tell yourself that you’re fine and it’s all good – and you really should be fine – but it definitely affects you, so you want to do what you can to make you feel good. Not to worry so much about what everybody sees, but to do what makes you feel good on the inside.
If you could give your younger self advice about beauty, what would it be?
Less is always more! Less is always more! Less makeup, don’t try to be too matchy-matchy – I was always matchy-matchy! – and try to get in a habit of being active. I always was active but I think now, I always thought I would always be skinny and I could eat whatever I wanted and then this year I was like, “holy crap!” this is so different. And I think just getting in that habit of working out is a good thing, rather than just thinking you’re fine all the time.
Who is your beauty role model?
I love seeing women who are so comfortable in their skin that they don’t wear a lot of makeup and they just are beautiful. Like Julia Roberts – you can just see how happy and fresh and beautiful they are from within.
What’s your one, can’t-live-without-it beauty product?
For Proactiv, the Refining Mask! That goes everywhere with me! And probably concealer (the YSL Touche Eclat and a MAC Studio Sculpt Concealer) and L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara. I kinda switch it up, it’s fun to mix it up!
