The Kentucky Derby may only last two minutes, but (hopefully, at least,) the party will last much longer. To ensure you and your guests get the feel of the South, no matter your geographical location, be sure to keep them hydrated, southern style. And no, we’re not talking about sweet tea. The derby drink of choice: Mint Julep.
While most recipes suggest you let the brew marinate overnight before serving, for those looking to serve up these cocktails today, don’t fret, they’re still great. Trust us!
4-6 cups of Bourbon
1 cup of sugar
1/2 cup of water
25 mint leaves
Mint sprigs, for garnish (optional)
Powdered sugar, for garnish (optional)
In a small saucepan, combine mint leaves, sugar and water, stirring occasionally over medium heat. Once the sugar completely dissolves, remove from heat, cover and let sit for 30 minutes before straining the liquid to remove the mint leaves. Pour the mint simple syrup you just made into a larger pitcher and add 4-6 cups of bourbon (you be the judge!). If you have time, let it sit for as close to 24 hours as you can. If not, no worries. When ready, serve the mixture in a cup packed to the rim with crushed ice. Garnish with a sprig of mint and a sprinkle of powdered sugar, if desired.
