Rodrigo Padilla of NYC’s famed Sally Hershberger Downtown has predicted this season’s hottest hair trend: the bob! And, with more and more women rocking the look this season, we have to admit, he was right!
Just recenty Keira Knightley was seen sporting the sleek, new style – and many women are following suit. Lopping off your locks, though, takes more than just the guts to do it. It also takes knowing which bobbed look will work best for you. Ready to rock this edgier, modern do? Rodrigo fills us in on the many different short crops available, and how to know which style will work for you!
If you have a ROUND face…
A long length bob below the chin is best but be sure to avoid layers around the face, as they will only accentuate the area around the cheekbones. If you want bangs, go for a choppy version that will slim the face since blunt bangs will only make the face look more round.
The bob can be worn with a little texture or blow dried with a round brush. If it’s texture you’re looking for, try the Sally Hershberger Genius Spray Wax ($12.50) – turn your head upside down and blast the spray for great piece-y ends!
For a more refined look, start out by applying Shu Uemura Art of Hair Satin Design ($33) before you blow dry your hair. It will leave the hair soft and conditioned. Finish with Sally Hershberger Salon Smooth Fix ($24) to tame any flyaways!
If you have an OVAL face…
If you have an oval face, your face is longer than it is wide. If you have this face type, you really have plenty of options on variations of length and textures. You can have a long, medium, short or extra short bob, or even a pixie. An oval face can really rock any shape so have fun with it!
Regardless of the type of bob you try with an oval face, you can wear no layers, some layers or extra layers and you can style it ultra sleek and soft, with some movement or super textured. You can also do it with short bangs, long bangs or no bangs!! Keep your look fresh by experimenting with different styling products. Keep a smoothing product, texture spray and pomade on hand.
If you have a SQUARE face…
Women with a square face have a square jaw and their face is generally as wide as it is long. This bob should be on the longer side to soften the hard edges of the jaw line and it can be achieved by layering around the face. Bangs generally don’t work for this face shape.
To offset your square jaw line when styling, consider an off-center part and make sure your layers are soft, with plenty of texture. A texture spray will be your best friend – try Shu Uemura Liquid Fabric ($33), it gives you really great control without being heavy or greasy.
If you have a HEART-SHAPED face…
This woman has a face that is wider at the forehead and cheekbones and narrow at the jaw. The bob for this face shape should be chin length or longer with some layers, avoiding height on top of the crown. Any type of a bang looks great, especially blunt bangs! When styling, you want to avoid too much texture at the crown so wear your hair natural or blow dried sleek.
