The Key To Curls: 5 Steps To Crunch-Free Curls

When it comes to hair, curls are king (err, queen) in my book. At least for now, anyway! Maybe it’s a result of too many days spent trying to take my locks from slightly wavy to stick straight. Or perhaps it’s just that my impatience with blow drying, flat ironing, and more to get there has reached its peak. Or maybe it’s just because there is something about curls that evoke a sense of the I-live-my-life-to-the-fullest attitude I try to embody. Regardless, if you’ve been checking out my Instagram pictures, you’ve likely been noticing my love affair with curly hair as of late. And, thankfully, Paul Mitchell’s brand NEW Curls line is making it easier for women everywhere to get the curls of their dreams.

5 Steps To Crunch-Free Curls

Start in the shower. For perfect curls, cleanse your hair with a sulfate-free shampoo/conditioner duo (like Paul Mitchell Spring Loaded Detangling Shampoo™) that lathers to cleanse without roughing up the hair’s cuticle, which, when aggravated, leaves you with frizzy fringe instead of coiffed curls. The result: curls perfectly primed for a frizz-free finish.

Condition weightlessly. If your hair is naturally wavy and curls are the goal, avoid heavy conditioners that weigh your hair down and pull out the natural wave you do have. Instead, hydrate, detangle and tame frizz with Paul Mitchell Full Circle Leave-In Treatment™, an all-in-one lightweight conditioning treatment that replenishes thirsty tresses, helps protect against damage and won’t weigh hair down.

Comb carefully. Brushes and curls should never meet – unless frizz is the goal. Instead, keep a comb in the shower and gently detangle hair while cleansing and conditioning before putting the brushes and combs aside for straightened days ahead.

Curl, don’t crunch. Whether your hair is naturally wavy or curly, defining your curls is essential. Settling for crunchy curls, though, is optional. When it comes to my hair, I like curls that look like you could put your fingers through them (not that I would ever risk messing them up!) and with Paul Mitchell Twirl Around™, a hydrating cream and smoothing gel hybrid, I get just the defined, long-lasting, frizz-free and crunch-less curls I want.

Further define. If you long for tighter curls than your natural waves allow, or you want to revive slept in curls, use a clampless 1-inch curling iron to further define small sections, curling hair away from your face for a more natural finish.
