Carmindy is not only one of the most highly sought after makeup artists, a star on TLC’s What Not To Wear and the co-founder of her own cosmetics line, but also a Real Beauty. Sure, she loves blush and mascara and all things makeup, but she loves Real Beauty even more and, as the latest spokesperson for Glowelle, she is working even harder than ever to spread her message about beauty coming from within. That being said, we couldn’t help but pick her brain about makeup too!
So, we sat down with Carmindy and asked her to weigh in on Real Beauty (and makeup too!)
Carmindy: On Makeup
You skin is always seemingly flawless, what is your secret?
Actually, my biggest beauty secret isn’t anything about makeup or even skincare, It’s antioxidants! I’ve been a diehard fan of antioxidants for years. I read Dr. Perricone’s book about eating salmon and antioxidants and all of that and fell hard for it. But then with all my travel it became hard so I started taking supplements, but they were expensive and annoying. So now I use Glowelle, which is an antioxidant powder that you can drink.
I’ve always been obsessed with nutrition, eating well and being active. I love food, but I never wanted to be skinny-skinny. So, it made sense for me to work with a company like Glowelle. I’m going to be 40 in March and because I’ve been ingesting antioxidants for years, my skin looks great. And so I throw Glowelle in my bag, it’s the perfect combination of antioxidants, vitamins and nutrients!
So, yeah, antioxidants are my beauty secret. Well, that, and Skinceuticals sunscreen. My dermatologist turned me on to their 45 sun block and I use it every day.
What are the products every woman should have in her makeup bag?
Sunscreen, because you have to reapply! A compact with pressed translucent powder, to touch up shine on the face and body. I love the matte Blot Powder from Mac ($22). A lip gloss or lipstick. My favorite is my Natural Beauty Forever Stay Moisture Gloss ($10.49) because it’s super sheer and yummy. Black mascara, never brown! It’s the best way to quickly define a face in a flash! And while lots of women get caught up in these big brushes out there now, it leaves them spending a lot of time cleaning up. Instead, look for a small brush to help lift and define, for no mess, great on the go. That’s why I created my Natural Beauty Lift & Define Mascara ($7.99).
You obviously go to a lot of glamorous events. What’s your beauty routine to prepare for a big night?
I drink tons of water, stay away from alcohol, eat cleanly, get plenty of sleep and use Luminizing Face Primer ($9.99) on my face and body (L face primer). Plus, my daily Glowelle. I use to buy all these supplements and this is everything in 1 easy pack! Sometimes before a big event, I’ll double-dose on Glowelle in protein shake for the days leading up to a big event. Before my brother’s wedding I mixed two packets of Glowelle with whey protein, frozen blueberries, water and a bit of powdered greens (they’re an aquired taste!) or sometimes I’ll mix peanut butter with Glowelle too!
What’s still missing in the beauty industry?
A lot, a lot. We need more easy, blendable, time saving products. We need thinner, sheerer, longer lasting and more eco-friendly products. (I call it “light-green” because 100% organic doesn’t work. But good for you synthetics mixed with organic ingredients can!)
Also, a lot of products are still promising things they can’t deliver on. I guess the number one thing that’s missing is the right language in promoting makeup. I never say, “change the shape of your eyes with this” or anything like that. It’s all about enhancing, highlighting, contouring…
What are the biggest beauty mishaps you see women make?
Choosing the wrong foundations! Lots of women are into cream and powder foundation because they’re easy. But all those mineral and cream powders dull your skin and make you look dull and creepy and old! You need to let your skin show and shine – and foundation is awesome – but you need sheer formulas like Airbrush Spray Makeup ($13.99).
Also, women over pluck their eyebrows! The more you butcher, the more you shock the follicle. For younger women especially, let your brows fill in. Products like Latisse can help with the growth, but if you’ve got a nice brow and just need to fill in a little, I love the Lorac Creamy Brow Pencils ($19) because the colors are spot on. If you need more of a dramatic fill in, I love the Make Up For Ever Waterproof Eyebrow Correctors ($19). It’s a liquid and you put a dot on the back of your hand and then use the angle brush that comes with it to fill in.
Carmindy: On Real Beauty
If you could give all women just one tip about beauty, what would it be?
Oh that’s an easy one, it’s definitely to embrace your natural self. Natural beauty is beautiful and it’s not about makeup or cosmetics, it’s about confidence. You should all do mirror mantras where you look in the mirror and compliment yourself. Tell yourself “I have a great smile” or “I have great skin.” It’s especially important to continue to say positive things in the mirror – especially as you get older.
I came to a crossroads in my career right before What Not To Wear where I could have chosen to work with celebs or real women. And it wasn’t even a real thought. A million makeup artists can tell you how to look like Beyoncé, but I don’t do that. I would never tell a women that she should try to look like a celebrity. The definition of ‘celebrity’ is one who’s celebrated, so celebrate yourself! If you were cast in a movie, everyone would want to look like you! So, don’t even play the compare game.
Do your Mirror Mantras. Look in the mirror every morning and pick one thing you love. Pick one feature to focus on each day that’s beautiful and celebrate it. Say it’s summer and your legs look great, put on some luminizing lotion and show those off – and leave everything else as is!
On the same note, if you wake up with a big pimple on your forehead, put on red lipstick to draw the attention there.
I also promote Contagious Compliments. If you see a woman with a great back or beautiful brows or amazing skin, tell her! It could make her day! You don’t know what’s going on in her life – she may have just broken up with her boyfriend, or been diagnosed with cancer, or lost her job – and you could make her day. It will also make you feel beautiful and great too!
We are too busy tearing each other down. We need to stop that.
Who do you look to for beauty inspiration?
I always turn to real women that I meet who are out and about. I was just at Art Basel and there were two women artists from Turkey who were a bit older, comfortable in their own skin and one was rocking signature red lips and they weren’t necessarily conventionally beautiful, but they were confident and beautiful. So, women who are comfortable in their own skin. I don’t look to celebs, just the most confident women in the room. I’m drawn to those women, want to talk to them. That’s why I created my beauty line: for real women.
If you could give your younger self advice about beauty, what would it be?
I would have used sunblock a lot earlier! Sun is the most damaging thing out there and I grew up in southern California and I’m already fighting sun spots and pre-cancerous spots. And I started using SPF at 18, but still the damage is done! You have to start young and stay out of the sun.
