Lipstick Tip: How To Get Long Lasting Lip Color

By Tayler Bartman

There is nothing worse than having to keep your favorite lip products in every bag and every pocket due to fear of fading lip color.  There has been a rise in priming products, but do these products actually work?  Here at The Beauty Bean we have some tips and tricks that will keep your pout looking perfect all day (and night) long!

More makeup tips and tricks for looking your best, even when exhausted!

There are products that claim to prevent creasing, fading and bleeding such as Too Faced Lip Insurance Lip Primer ($19) and Urban Decay Lip Primer Potion ($20). And while these products can be useful investments, there are actually products that you may already have in your makeup bag that can do the trick too!

The first, most important tip for lasting lip color is to make sure you have smooth, clean lips.  Exfoliating your lips is important for removing excess oils and dead skin.  Simply apply a heavy coat of Vaseline ($2.99) to your lips and let it sit for at least one minute, but the longer the better.  Then take a children’s toothbrush (yes, it must be a children’s toothbrush and it must have soft bristles,) and brush your lips in a circular motion for one minute.

Next, create a base for your lip product.  This can be done in several ways.  When putting on foundation, make sure to apply it over your lips as well or use concealer to prime your lips.  This works especially well when using a nude lip color.  Lastly, you can use a lip liner to create a base by outlining your lips and then filling in the rest of the lip with the liner as well.

It’s also important to look for lip color products designed to last substantially longer than usual.  Lip stains last longer than lipsticks or lip-glosses (we love Tarte LipSurgence ($24)); although, if you’re partial to a glossy finish, we like MAC Pro Longwear Lipcolour ($21) with its dual stain and gloss.  You don’t though, need to invest in a new product in order to make your lip lacquer last. Rather, Bobbi Brown’s trick is to apply your lipstick, then blot and repeat this process until you have created your own lip stain!

Remember, the darker the color the more difficult it will be to stop bleeding and fading. A quirky make up trick to keep your red lip lasting longer: mix Jell-O powder with water and apply it to your lips with a Q-tip before putting on your red lipstick or gloss to create a long-lasting stain as a base! Brings a whole new meaning to sweet lips!
