Lipstick Tips: How To Prep Your Lips For Long Lasting Lipstick

By Alix Turoff

The color of the season may change, but lipstick never goes out of style and the desire for long lasting color never wanes.

The trick to nailing the perfect red (or pink, or coral, or vampy purple, or, well, any other color!) lip, though, is in priming, lining and setting!

Prime: Apply a thick layer or vaseline to your lips and let sit for 10 minutes before wiping it off and buffing your lips with a dry tooth brush, use a store bought sugar scrub like Bliss Fabulips Sugar Lip Scrub ($18), or make Alexis’ DIY lip scrub before applying lipstick.

Line: We’re not talking your grandma’s matronly lip liner! Instead, choose a nude shade, like NYX Cosmetics’ Slim Lip Pencil in Peek-a-Boo Natural ($3.49), which matches your natural lip color. It will prevent your lipstick color from bleeding, invisibly.

Set: Once you’ve primed and lined, apply your lipstick. Blot away excess and set it with a very gentle swipe of powder, like Laura Mercier’s Loose Setting Powder ($35), to keep your color lasting longer. If the powder causes your lips to look too ashy, apply more lipstick on top.
