Red Lipstick: We Found The Perfect Festive Reds For Your Skintone!

By Becca Gregg

Quicker than we had time to say Happy Thanksgiving, the holiday season is upon us in full-blown mode. Time for parties, shopping, family gatherings and impromptu get-togethers. And, of course, one of the only times of year that we can readily get away with sparkles, glitter, sequins and the likes (even for daytime!).

Hoping to amp up your holiday go-to this year? Whether it be a holiday office party, shopping with your girlfriends or even just baking some seasonal goodies in your kitchen, feeling festive and glam can make all the difference.

Our advice is to look no further than a classic, old friend: Red lipstick.

With just a few swipes of a crimson-inspired hue, even the most conservative of us has the power to feel like a vixen.

Think you can’t pull it off? Not so fast.

According to Courtney, a color specialist at Sephora, finding the perfect pallet for your pout is as simple as knowing your skin tone. “Typically, if you are fair, you want to have more of a blue-based red,” she explains. “If you are more of a medium skin tone, you can pull off a basic cherry-type of red.” Those with an olive skin tone “can work with more of a tomato red,” Courtney says, adding that berry reds work best for very dark complexions.

Once you’ve found the perfect shade, rocking the red is inevitable, as long as you follow a few key rules for application:

Load up on lip primer. “If you don’t have one, you can use concealer. That creates a barrier between your lips and the lipstick, so that it doesn’t feather,” Courtney explains.

Line your lips. Depending on what time of the day it is, use either a nude or color matching lipliner. “For daytime, don’t line your lips (or use a liner that matches your natural lip color). It’ll give you a softer look,” Courtney says. But, as she adds, “At night, line your lips for a stronger, more defined look.”

Keep the rest to a minimum. “Definitely keep the eyes understated. You want to make sure that you’re super clean on the face,” Courtney notes. “At night, you can play around more, but keep it simple.”
