Teeth Whitening: 3 Top Dentists Share Their Tips

By Alexis Wolfer

Bright, white teeth are paramount to a confident smile. Sure, we all know to brush and floss twice each day and to visit a dentist regularly, but what about other easy-to-implement steps we can take to keep our pearly whites as white as can be? We turned to three of the top dentists in NY for a few less-than-obvious smile-perfecting tips.

Juicy oranges, clementines and other citrusy treats, may mark the beginning of fall, but, according to Dr. Ramim Tabib of NYC Smile Design, citrus fruits can cause erosion of the enamel on our teeth. So, if you love citrus fruits, rinse your mouth with water after you eat to wash away the harmful acids that can weaken the enamel.

Those of us who are a bit obsessive about the color of our choppers know the main culprits: coffee, tea and red wine – or so we thought. But, according to renowned cosmetic dentist Dr. Irwin Smigel, white wine can stain even worse than red! Who knew? So, if you’re a wine drinker, no matter the color, make sure to alternate with sips of water so stains can’t stick as easily.

Knowing what to avoid is great but it’s not always enough – especially if you’re reading this after years of staining behaviors. And, for better or worse, removing stains from your teeth isn’t quite the same as scrubbing the bathroom floor. Rather, in your mouth, vigorous brushing with hard bristles is not your best course of action. In fact, according to Drs. Lowenberg, Lituchy and Kantor (who have a celebrity client list that makes you want to quit your job so you can camp outside their offices all day), brushing too vigorously or with too hard of a brush can irritate and erode the gums. And those whitening toothpastes? Well, according to the doctors behind Hollywood’s pearliest whites, whitening toothpaste alone is not strong enough to whiten your teeth – it must be use in conjunction with at-home whitening products (like the Go Smile Go Discover Teeth Whitening Kit, $59 or Crest 3D White Whitestrips, $27.99) or in-office treatments.
