The Best Foundation: Confessions of a Foundation Addict

By Lindsay Tigar

We love when beauty articles advise to “bronze your cheeks and glisten your lips with gloss on your way out the door for an all-day-wearable look.” That sounds fantastic, truly – if you happen to be among the blessed few who are constantly blemish free and radiate natural beauty from the second you wake up.

But what if you’re one of the less lucky ones for whom the morning usually includes rising to find a new bump on your chin, your hair a tangled mess and the overnight acne treatment dried to your skin, not allowing you to really move your face. It’s wildly attractive, don’t you think?

How to prevent and banish breakouts for good!

Know this: you’re not a rare breed – about 50% of women experience adult acne. And while derms estimate the majority of zit nuances will cease with age and the change of hormones, trying to climb the corporate ladder with a red bump on your cheek isn’t easy to do.

And so, I blame my addiction to foundation on my acne. Most of my friends despise the cakey, thick foundation that lays heavy on your face, clogging your pores and running the risk of looking like Liza Minnelli. I’ll agree with them – I hate the feeling of makeup on my fingertips and the task of scrubbing it off. Having been a beauty writer for a while now, I know foundation isn’t the best idea for problematic skin and if I didn’t have to, I wouldn’t wear it. But it’s not that cut and dry – when you’re a 20- or 30-something that needs to have a fresh face to face the world, you want to feel confident while doing it. And foundation provides that confidence. Or at least masks the insecurities to develop that poise.

Going on my tenth year of wearing foundation almost daily, (except on Makeup Free Mondays, of course,) here are my picks for the best out there today:

AHAVA Mineral Makeupcare Light Foundation, $28 at Drugstore.com
Mineral makeup is undeniably better for your skin but most brands don’t provide the coverage a lady with troublesome skin needs. This foundation from AHAVA, however, does. It’s packed with Dead Sea Minerals, vitamins and amino acids, providing nutrients your pores needs. Most importantly though, it’s an oil-free foundation – so it comes off easily and doesn’t clog your pores.

Rimmel Match Perfection Foundation, $5.68 at Drugstore.com
Battling summer heat while wearing foundation is a task in itself – nothing is more unattractive then your sweat dyed beige, rolling down your face. My pick for coverage that works and doesn’t evaporate is Rimmel’s match perfection. It goes on easily without requiring extra concealer and if you dab some powder on top, it’ll stay put even in above-90-degree weather.

Benefit Boi-ing Concealer, $19 at Sephora.com
Yeah, it’s not actually foundation – but that’s the point! The coverage is so flawless with this concealer that it serves the same camouflaging purpose as foundation. It finishes smooth without creasing and tiny dab goes a long way. I especially suggest this for acne scars or dark circles that won’t go away.

Clinique Acne Solutions Liquid Makeup, $24.50 at Sephora.com
I’ve been using Clinique nearly as long as I’ve been wearing makeup and I’m always a big fan of most anything they produce. This foundation is no different – it’s designed for acne-prone skin and helps reduce the production of oil that causes most blemishes. It goes on and off easily, and actually hides the imperfections without placing a layer of gunk on your face.
