2010 Lip Color To Wear This Fall: Black Lipstick

By Alexis Wolfer

In a throw-back to the early 90’s, vamp lipstick is back. The dark, sometimes even black, lip lacquer hues painted the puckers of models strutting down the fall 2010 runways at such trend-setting shows as Peter Som, Missoni, Christian Dior and Proenza Shouler (pictured, respectively). Needless to say, we took note. And, now that fall 2010 is practically upon us, we’re ready to start rocking the fashionably fall look.

Well aware of the fact that pitch-black lips aren’t for everyone, though, we’ve found shades to suit everyone – from the most daring darks to the barely-there blacks (which, surprisingly, do exist!).

Our Top 4 Picks:

Ready to go all in? Try Lime Crime Opaque Lipstick in Styletto ($16) from spacenk.com. The rich pigment and opaque finish brings the dramatic straight-from-the-runway look to you. Keep the look matte for a truly trendsetting mouth, or play it up with a bit of gloss. Click here to purchase.

If true black seems too Wicked Witch of the West (rather than wickedly fierce – the look we’re aiming for!), try Topshop Make Up Lipstick in Vamp ($16) from topshop.com. The deep burgundy wine shade is reminiscent of the painted pouts at Christian Dior and Proenza Shouler, without being too severe, and the formula fabulously hydrates for smooth, hydrated lips. In a perfect marriage of the black lip look and the purple makeup trend, Make Up For Ever’s new Rouge Artist Intense in #49 Satin Blueberry ($19) at sephora.com will look like you brilliantly stained your lips with crushed berries. Layer it on for a more dramatic look or apply it lightly over a clear lip balm for a more subtle stain. Either way, you’ll undeniably look fashion-forward, without jumping in head first with a bold, black pucker. Click here to purchase.

As Poppy King states on her website, her Black Tie Shine Sinner gloss ($22) at Barneys.com does for lips what stocking do for legs. And while we were a bit skeptical (and intimidated) but the pot of black sheen at first, our confidence was quickly bolstered when we pat on this sexy, subtly grey sheen. Gorgeous on its own or over any of your favorite lipsticks, this gloss added depth and sheen without being noticeably black. By this point, though, we should clearly know to listen to anything Poppy says and to buy whatever Lipstick Queen creates, no questions asked – because, well, they really don’t ever get it wrong. Lesson learned, lips lacquered. Click here to purchase.
