Backstage Beauty: Sarah Lucerno for Stila at Julie Haus Spring/Summer 2010
Recreate the look with the help of Sarah Lucerno, Stila’s lead makeup artist and the genius behind the look.
From the moment we saw the makeup backstage at Julie Haus’ spring/summer show at Mercedez Benz Fashion Week, we were obsessed. The look, rocker-chic meets feminine-fab, was flawless. It was tough and edgy but also light and spring-like. And while many spring beauty trends require you to wait for frost to fade, this look will work as well with your winter leather as it will with your spring lace. Plus, unlike many runway fashions, this look is actually wearable in a real-way.
As Sarah tells The Beauty Bean, “the glamour grungy chic look is easy to recreate. It allows you to play with plums and color and to step away from using black and gray on the eyes all the time. It is lighter and fresher… perfect for spring!” We agree! Here, her how-to:
For the Skin
For the “worn in look, like she’s been out dancing all night and is just going with the flow,” begin by applying Stila Natural Finish Oil-Free Foundation ($38) over well-hydrated skin. Purposefully avoid under-eye concealer in order to allow the natural darkness to show, in line with the “out all night” vibe. After using Stila Perfecting Concealer ($23) to mask any additional redness, set the look with Hydrating Loose Powder ($32), a one-shade-fits-all that, she assures us, “looks great on all skin tones.”
For the Eyes
Begin by brushing Bouquet eyeshadow ($18), a very soft pink, all over the lids in order to prime the eyes. Then use a mix of pink and plum shadows (which, Sarah tells us, will be available in a trio called Bella, although you can use Pigalle eyeshadow ($18) if you just can’t wait – because we couldn’t!). Apply the pomegranate shade closest to the lash line on both the top and bottom lashes – smudging it out so it looks diffused and blended before applying a second layer of the purple on the lower lashes. Then start layering on Major Lash Mascara ($8.50) on the top and bottom lashes. As Sarah tells us, “Just when the Stila artists thought they had applied enough mascara, I said MORE!!! It was exaggerated and looked amazing on the runway.” So just keep layering it on!
For the Brows
Brows were brushed up and very natural. Sarah suggests using a powder like Stila Brow Set in Medium ($18).
For the Lips
Sarah completed the look with a sheer tinted balm to moisturize the lips and added a bit of nude/peach to the lips for a subtle sheen. Beauty Bean trick: use a dab of your Perfecting Concealer!
