How To: Michael Angelo at Wonderland Beauty Parlor for Carlos Miele

Carlos Miele has built an empire on dramatic gowns, especially colorful ones. His collections often feature bright floor-length chiffon and prints inspired by photographs of his native Brazil. It’s no surprise then that he doesn’t shy away when it comes to hair and makeup either.

For a special presentation of his Fall 2010 collection, Michael Angelo of Wonderland Beauty Parlor, a major favorite of The Beauty Bean, created a particularly dramatic look featuring some unconventional colors. While blue lips and ombre eyeshadow the color of a sunset may be too adventurous for most, the pompadour updo Angelo created is surprisingly versatile and easy to achieve.

Read on to see how to get the look:

1) Prep hair with Toni & Guy Label M Dry Shampoo ($32.95) and Shu Uemura Sheer Laquer Finishing Spray ($33) to achieve that “second day” hair texture.

2) Take a triangle shaped section from the front of hair and secure with a clip. It should be off center, as asymmetry is key to this look.

3) Brush all hair over to the side that has the front section clipped and lightly coat the hair with Shu Uemura Shape Paste ($33). Secure side-swept hair with bobby pins placed 2-3 inches away from the hairline.

4) Roll hair lengths like a French twist and secure with bobby pins, leaving any excess length out. Spray hair generously with Shu Uemura Sheer Laquer hairspray.

5) Using a medium barrel curling iron, set the clipped front section and excess length from French twist into small barrel curls, rolled away from the face. To protect the hair from excessive heat, spray each section with Shu Uemura IronDesign Protective Thermal Spray ($33). Use pin curl clips to secure sections as they cool.

6) Remove pin curl clips one at a time and lightly backcomb sections before rolling them back up and securing with a bobby pin on either side.
