Shannon Elizabeth talks to The Beauty Bean about Beauty, Body Image, Women & the Future…
She achieved sex symbol, cult-like status with her role in American Pie, but Shannon Elizabeth is oh, so much more than a gorgeous face and a hot body (although she’s clearly both of those as well!).
So, what’s Shannon Elizabeth up to now?
Don’t worry, she’s still acting, directing, writing and producing. But with a jewelry line, perfume and website under her name, you can also add activist and entrepreneur to that list – and, of course, Real Beauty too!
We asked Shannon Elizabeth to weigh in on all things Real Beauty…
I think beauty is… something that comes from within. It’s a confidence, an attitude and an essence that can’t always be described, but is undeniable. Beauty isn’t strictly about physical. If the inside doesn’t match the outside, then the outside doesn’t matter…in my opinion.
I deal with the pressure for body “perfection” by… trying to eat healthy (I’m practically vegan, been vegetarian for over 10 years now, and I’m gluten-free) and doing some kind of cardio, dance, yoga or working out whenever I can. But the bottom line is that I really do it all for me – nobody else. It’s about what makes you happy and what makes you feel energetic, healthy and strong.
When the media analyzes or criticizes my body, or the bodies of others, I feel… like it’s completely rude, inappropriate and bad karma. Everyone should just take care of themselves the way they would like to and if you don’t have something good to say, please don’t say it at all. I feel like when anyone publicly criticizes someone else, especially with regard to appearance, it’s really just reflecting their own insecurities they have about themselves.

My favorite body part of mine is… my lips. In high school I remember thinking thin lips were beautiful and thought mine were swollen for some reason. I would hang my lip loose, making sure I wasn’t biting them unknowingly, to see if the size would go down. Now I am so grateful to have full lips!!
The women I most admire are… the ones who have started their own businesses, run companies, are smart and talented, juggle career and family perfectly and know exactly who they are with their confidence shining through!
My dreams for the future are… to turn Shansen Jewelry into a household name and a well respected, sought after brand with my cousin Tamsen Fadal. We’d like to not only expand the jewelry side of the company, but also move into great household items and yoga inspired products. I’d like to get my new perfume, “S” by Shannon Elizabeth, into stores across the country and into the hands of every woman who’s looking for something that’s different, light and spiritual. In addition, I have a beauty product I’m trying to bring to market at the moment – I’m just looking for the right financier and then off we go! I have a lot of goals as well when it comes to animal rights and change in this world. I’m working with Last Chance for Animals right now to ban the export of live animals from Australia, shut down every puppy mill in America and ban the use of animals in every circus still in existence!
The one lesson I try to remind myself of is… that you need to find what makes you truly happy and don’t worry about what anyone else thinks. They don’t have to live your life or walk in your shoes. So what you think and how you feel about stuff in your life is the voice you should really be listening to!
