Celebrity trainer Joe Dowdell has worked with everyone from Natalie Portman and Anne Hathaway to Eva Mendez and Claire Danes. Currently, though, he’s the man behind Poppy Montgomery’s sexy, svelte shape and, thank goodness, he’s sharing his top 3 training tips with us!
How Poppy Montgomery Stays Fit…
Circuit Training. Joe says circuit training is essential to Poppy Montgomery’s fitness routine. In particular, he alternated strength training moves (switching off between a lower body dominant exercise and an upper body dominant exercise) with 60 second high intensity cardio exercise in a series of “mini-circuits.”

Core Work. For all the moms out there, you know that post-pregnancy bodies are in particular need of core-strengthening workouts. But, the fact is, all women could use some tummy-toning exercises (and not just for a sexy 6-pack!). For Poppy, Joe alternates core stability and core mobility exercises exercises.
For core stability exercises, Poppy Montgomery does traditional Plank Holds (click here to see how to do a perfect plank!) and Moving Plank Holds (like the traditional high plank but place the toes of your feet on a pair of ValSlides or paper plates and walk your hands out in front of you while dragging your body behind you, making sure your core stays engaged and you spine stays neutral).

Poppy also does core mobility exercises, like Medicine Ball Chest Passes. Stand with your feet shoulder width apart, knees slightly bent and torso angled slightly forward with a 4-6lb medicine ball held at chest level like you’re going to perform a basketball chest pass. Either stand 3 feet from a concrete wall and throw the ball into the wall and catch it as it rebounds off. Repeat 8-10 times. If you can’t find a concrete wall, find a clear area and throw the medicine ball as far as you can. Jog to retrieve the ball and repeat in the opposite direction. Repeat 5 times.
Healthy Diet. Poppy eats a diet rich in lean protein (like salmon) and lots of fibrous veggies. Plus, she drinks a lot of water so she stays well hydrated.
