Can Coffee Prevent Cancer?

Here’s another reason to invest in a Keurig coffee maker (or just load up on Starbucks gift cards): a recently conducted study shows that coffee can help prevent oral cancer risk.

In a 26-year study of almost 1 million healthy men and women published in The American Journal of Epidemiology, researchers found that the risk of death from oral or throat cancer was 26% lower for those who drank one cup of coffee daily, 33% lower for those who drank 2-3 cups a day, and 50% percent lower for those who drank 4-6cups daily, when compared with those who drank no caffeinated coffee at all.

Decaf coffee and tea (even caffeinated verities), however, showed no cancer reducing benefits.

While it’s unclear whether the coffee is actually preventing oral or throat cancer or merely increasing survival rates, lead author, Janet S. Hildebrand of the American Cancer Society, said that although it’s unclear how coffee is working, it’s clear coffee has some anti-cancer benefits.

We’re suddenly feeling infinitely less guilty over our monthly coffee expenses… Hey, hundreds of dollars each month for an energy bolt may sound absurd, but for cancer prevention it seems like a small price to pay!
