Cervical Cancer Gets Glam: Save Lives With Makeup

By Jessie Leventhal

While breast cancer, deservedly so, gets loads of attention (think: pink products, pink ribbons, an entire month devoted to awareness, fundraising walks and more), we tend to not pay as much attention to the second most common type of cancer for women: cervical cancer.  Not only is cervical cancer the second leading cancer among women, though, but also it’s entirely preventable since we know the single cause. So, while Cervical Health Awareness Month may not come until January, September is Gynocological Cancer Awareness month and, well, why not highlight the issue now? Who knows how many cases we can prevent by raising awareness as soon as possible!

5 things you need to know about cervical cancer:

Cervical cancer kills 288,000 women annually worldwide.

Cervical cancer is the only cancer with a single known cause: the human papillomavirus (HPV), a common sexually transmitted infection that can cause abnormal cells to form which can develop into cervical cancer.

The pap smear, long the gold standard in detection, though, is not foolproof when used on its own.

New technologies, like HPV testing, make cervical cancer virtually 100 percent preventable.

The HPV vaccine, Gardasil, prevents HPV infections and, when used in conjunction with regular pap smears, makes cervical cancer entirely preventable and curable.

How to help:

Support. Christine Baze, an accomplished musician and cervical cancer survivor (yes, she is amazing!), is the director of the remarkable organization, The Yellow Umbrella. Christina began writing songs about cervical cancer, something that nobody seemed to want to talk about. As she got more people involved, she decided to start a series of concerts and eventually, the Yellow Umbrella Tour around the USA and Canada was born. If you want more information, go to theyellowumbrella.org.
