Hair Accessories Are Back! An Urban Safari Headband

By Elizabeth Monson

Hair accessories are back and better than ever. Forget about bejeweled bobby pins and bra-strap headbands, these are not your middle school tress trimmings. Hair accessories have recently been popping up on runways and in editorials in the most stylish ways. What we love most is that these little add-ons aren’t just a pretty way to dress up an outfit; they are perfect for those days that our hair is looking less than stellar.

Would you wear orange lipstick?

Say goodbye to hat hair and obvious day-after oil with a chic headband or ponytail holder with these African print bands by Colette Malouf. Arguably the Queen of hair accessories, Malouf’s products have appeared on Sex and the City and Gossip Girl as well as recently on the runways of Diane von Furstenburg and Marc Jacobs. She is known for her whimsical attitude towards design and for breaking the rules when it comes to what you put in your hair. Her Spring 2010 collection takes natural elements like feathers, raffia and wood, and adds punchy colors for a haute hippie vibe.

Finally understand your food cravings! Speaking of chocolate…

Our favorite pieces are the Africa print bands. With small wires to add structure and support, the headband is perfectly bendable, meaning not only will it never fall off, but you can also arrange however you want on your head. For a more subtle look, lay it flat on your head or tie it in a bow; for something more adventurous go for an abstract knot or bend the ends up like sculptural branches. The bendable hairtie is great for playing around as well. Wrap the ends around to obscure the elastic holder or knot it on top (our favorite look).

Our favorite hat to take you into spring.
