DIY Emerald Nail Art

When it comes to Japanese nail art, no one does it better than, well, the Japanese. (Duh.)

So, when I heard that Mars the Salon (the famous Tokyo nail art salon) had a West Hollywood outpost, I pretty much beelined it there the moment I landed at LAX.

In a private room equipped with a flat screen TV, an extraordinarily comfortable chair and a single chocolate dipped pretzel on a lux laquered tray, Mayu (my new go-to manicurist here in LA) hand blended black and green glitter to create the perfect mix of edge (because, well, black makes everything just a bit edgier) and trend (Pantone did just name emerald the color of the year) for the tips of my CalGel manicure. Choosing a gradient effect (meaning that it’s clear by my cuticle and saturated with glittered color at the tips, blending in between) to extend the life of glittered manicure (because when you commit to nail art that lasts 3-4 weeks you want it to grow out without looking like it’s, well, growing out), my nails look like they took a dip (err, “trip,” halucinogenic-style) to the Wizard of Oz. Ruby slippers not included (although highly recommended). Now yours can too…

How To DIY Emerald Green Glittered Nail Art

Prepare your nails for polish (pushing back cuticles, removing existing polish, filing tips, etc.). For more tips on giving yourself a DIY manicure, click here!

Paint nails with 2 coats of high-gloss clear nail polish like Butter London Hardwear Topcoat ($18). Let fully dry.

In a small, disposable bowl, mix Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Mint Glitter ($12) with just enough Butter London Hardwear Topcoat to create a thick, but spreadable polish. Add 1-3 drops of Butter London Chimney Sweep Nail Polish ($14) for a murkier, deeper base.

Using a nail polish brush, apply the glittered mixture to your tips, blending towards your cuticle until the desired level of saturation is achieved.

Let dry before applying top coat.
