Acupuncture For Balance: How To Find a Sacred Space
Saying we need to find a better sense of balance in our lives may be the biggest understatement of 2011 (so far). We’re notorious workaholics (great strength, often times greater weakness) and always eager to take on new projects (despite already being overly committed). But sometimes a girl just can’t resist helping out a friend, or signing on to back a worthy cause, or hitting up a fabulous dinner date, or, well, you get the idea!
So, when we needed help rebalancing, we knew exactly who to turn to: Bianca Beldini, co-founder of Sacred Space Acupuncture, and all around spiritual (and centered) guru.
After a slightly skeptical read through their website (what can we say, we much prefer a noisy and disobliging environment as opposed to a tranquil and supportive one – note to selves: this is probably the root of the problem!), we figured why not give it a shot? At the very least we would walk away knowing we had put aside an hour of time just for the purpose of calming our always whirling minds.
10 steps for a more balanced life!
As per usual, we showed up entirely unprepared for our appointment. What? Scouring the city for the perfect long cape doesn’t take precedence over filling out the evaluation intake form, which is meant to “form a pattern of my own holistic landscape and define the clinical scene of my disharmony”? We were off to a great start already. However, Bianca, after kindly introducing herself, brushed off our absentmindedness (ahem, lapse of priorities) and happily filled out the form with us.
Now it was time to get down to charka business. Lying down on the treatment table, Bianca dimmed the lights and used her innate ability to help make sense of whatever emotional or physical disharmony might be going on inside. She examined our tongue (no joke) and pulse and she palpated both our abdomen and areas of tenderness along our meridian channels.
Next came the insertion of the needles. Needles are chosen specifically for how they relate to a person’s disharmonies. Often people find themselves entering into a state of deep relaxation at this point. Us…not so much. We hoped to pass right out as soon as Bianca turned off the lights, put on the tranquil ohm-inducing music and left the room. She even put a freakin heat lamp over the tummy area – how much more relaxing can you get?! But all we did, in between hoping Bianca would come back in and keep us company, was to engage our same old mind-spins. Feeling completely defeated and spiritless, Bianca was quick to point out was that, tranquil or not, the experience was uniquely ours – and that was something we could appreciate.
Could your diet be negatively affecting your mood?
According to Bianca, what separates her and Sacred Space from other acupuncture practices is her unique background combining a western base of medical knowledge (as a previous physical therapist) with the eastern philosophies of Chinese medicine. As she explains, “I was trained to use three different “styles,” including Traditional Chinese medicine, Japanese medicine and, lastly, a special technique that focuses specifically on the muscular system, which targets and treats most muscular pain conditions both quickly and efficiently.” Furthermore, Bianca takes into her treatment not only this education of both sides of the medical coin, but her personal experiences and challenges with recovery from both physical pain (she suffered a neck injury that Acupuncture healed) and emotional pain (post traumatic stress post a personal experience as a 9/11 survivor) in which she credits Acupuncture with healing.
Going into 2011, we’re hoping to continue to find that inner balance and harmony we need to be the best we can be. Will it come solely as a result of Acupuncture? Unlikely. But if you are interested in seeing if this path works for you, or you just want to meet an amazingly cool woman, Sacred Space is the only space to go.
