Philadelphia Spa Spotlight: Juju Spa & Organics, A Healthy Treat For You & Mother Earth
By Becca Gregg
Upon stepping through the doors of Juju Spa & Organics, it’s easy to forget that you’re in the middle of a bustling, 1.5 million-strong, metropolis. Just blocks from the touristy sights of old Philadelphia, the quaint spa sits nestled on the city’s Fabric Row, nearly hidden amongst the lace, vinyl and upholstery that jet out from the windows of surrounding shops. In fact, it took us nearly three trips up and down the block before spotting Juju’s storefront. Once you’re lucky enough to spot the small sign though, an urban oasis – chock full of serene smells, sounds and staff – awaits you.
After first hearing about the holistic spa, we couldn’t wait to test out Juju’s Everyday Organic Facial ($85), complete with an antioxidant-rich organic Suki Peel ($30). Playing off of their “green” philosophy, Juju’s organic, plant-based products are all natural and non-toxic, leaving spa-goers with the soft, dewy skin we all long for. (And that we were more than ready for, considering the continuing recuperation efforts stemming from a particularly nasty winter.) Upon leading us back to a dark, dimly lit room, our aesthetician, Gail, commenced what would turn out to be an hour of heaven on earth…or, at least in Philadelphia.
An inexpensive body wash with 7 benefits!
First, Gail used a rich cleansing lotion, followed by a much-needed bio-resurfacing facial peel. Afterwards, she applied a pure facial moisturizer with balancing lotion, a transformative clay mask and a concentrated balancing toner with lavender. She then lathered us with balancing day lotion and eye repair balm, which we most definitely needed. Intermixed somewhere in there, Gail extracted any necessary abrasions and blemishes. Despite trying to forget that latter part (we kid!), the facial, neck and limb massages that our wonderful aesthetician threw into the process made up for any discomfort during the extraction (which, we assure you, was pretty mild).
Bring the aromatherapy benefits home with you!
In the end, we departed from Juju feeling as fresh as a daisy amidst the concrete backdrop. Our skin radiated with a glow reminiscent of that from our first kiss back. And the best part? We did a favor for both the environment and our skin by taking advantage of Juju’s earth-friendly and organic products, rather than employing the harsh, dangerous chemicals found in many other products. Killing two birds with one stone? We’ll take that.
