Waxing Spa Gets The Hair Off, Brilliantly
By Alix Turoff
Hair removal is – for better or worse (we’re not passing judgment) – one of the many realities of being a woman in the United States. It seems to have begun in ancient Egypt where women sought the hairless bodies they thought were indicative of innocence and youth. And thus the practice spread (except for in France where the French would not have it, but that’s fodder for a whole other article).
While waxing caught on quickly in the United States, it wasn’t until the popularity of the bikini wax in the 1990’s that waxing became the phenomenon it is today. Originating in Brazil, the bikini wax was developed for women who wanted to bare-all in their bikinis. But leave it to Sex And The City to start a trend when Carrie’s accidental bikini wax turned into a pleasant experience. Good thing Uni.K.Wax Center was around to open its doors to all the would-be Carries that began flocking to salons to receive the until then, taboo treatment.
Another Sex And The City trend, and how you can DIY at home!
It’s no wonder, though, that waxing has become so popular. Not only does it take 3-8 weeks until hair begins to grow back, but also, because the hair is removed from the roots, skin is left smooth and silky and hair grows back without the unsightly stubble you get with shaving! Plus, the removal of dead skin cells when waxing rejuvenates and exfoliates skin.
So, we put on our highest Louboutins and made like Carrie as we stepped into Uni.K.Wax’s Third Avenue location in New York City. We could tell by the calming music in the lobby that our experience was going to be a good one. As we went on a tour of the center, we were impressed by the décor (the light, summery color scheme reminded us of Uni.K’s Floridian history) and the overall cleanliness of the space. The last stop on the tour was what we imagine the Willy Wonka Factory of waxing to look like: a laboratory-like place where multiple staff members mix wax to ensure that each customer receives the right wax for his or her specific needs and skin type.
DIY waxing: Is it a good idea?
As a wax-only spa, Uni.K’s technicians are trained extensively and use a proprietary formula that heats to the perfect temperature, remains elastic and is completely natural. Without a doubt, our arm wax was the least painful waxing experience we’ve ever had. The green wax was applied in large areas and left to dry while the other arm was covered. With one peel, an entire armful of hair was removed. When over, our skin felt even smoother than before.
With multiple locations in Florida, California and New York City, Uni.K has not only mastered the craft of hair removal but also mode it available to women in multiple states. And for all you non-arm waxers out there, (lucky you,) Uni.K also offers a variety of other waxing services including legs, stomach, bikini (regular and Brazilian), lip, eyebrows, full face and anything else you can think of.
