Is Astaxanthin The Secret Weapon Against Aging?
If you want to prevent aging (well, on your skin anyways… sadly, we can’t do anything about the actual passing of time!) it’s all about antioxidants and sunscreens.
Sure, retinols aren’t to be ignored, but they’re more about reversing damage rather than preventing it from happening in the first place. But, as we all know, prevention is the best medicine, and when it comes to preventing wrinkles, sunspots, thinning skin, and more, the power players are antioxidants and sunscreens and, well, those two camps have been relatively consistent for the last decade or so with vitamin C ruling the antioxidant camp.
Meet Astaxanthin, the latest antioxidant making a splash.
Pronounced “asta-ZAN-thin,” Astaxanthin is a red carotenoid produced by algae and found naturally in orange and red fruits and vegetables as well as dark leafy greens. It’s actually the same carotenoid that gives salmon, lobsters, and flamingos their pink hue! But fret not, it won’t turn you pink (not that we’d mind!). It will, though, protect you from those aging free radicals swirling around the universe and aging that beautiful skin of yours.
Relative to Vitamin C (the former gold standard in antioxidant skin care), Astaxanthin has been shown to be almost 65 times stronger in combating free radicals, according to Debasis Bagchi, Ph.D. Pharmacy Sciences, Creighton University School of Health Sciences. And other studies show it to be 100-500 times more powerful than the antioxidant Vitamin E!
Moreover, unlike many other antioxidants, Astaxanthin is extremely stable, never becoming pro-oxidant in the body.
While the topical benefits haven’t been rigorously tested yet (what can we say, research has other priorities #sigh), you don’t have to wait to reap the purported benefits.
