How To Prevent + Heal Sun Damage

By Alix Turoff

While it pains us to admit, the end of summer is in our sights. That doesn’t mean, though, that proper skin care and sun protection is any less important than they were Memorial Day Weekend.

The American Cancer Society reports that each year, there are “more new cases of skin cancer than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon.”

That’s no joke!

It’s why we’re always stressing the importance of practicing proper skincare when spending time in the sun. We’ve rounded up a few products that will help you enjoying the rest of the summer without having to worry about the dangers of the sun’s potentially dangerous rays.

Before Sun Exposure

The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends using a sunscreen of at least SPF 15 as the basis of a skin protection regimen. It’s also important that the sunscreen you choose is “broad spectrum,” meaning that it protects against both types of ultraviolet rays (UVA and UVB). You’ll also want something water and sweat resistant to stand up to your outdoor activities (hello, paddleboarding!). Apply one ounce (about 2 tablespoons) of sunscreen about thirty minutes prior to sun exposure and reapply every 2 hours (or any time after being in the water).

Looking for a new sunscreen? We really like Clarins’ Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen Care Oil Spray ($35) because it meets all of our sunscreen requirements in an easy-to-apply spray on formula that protects both skin AND hair (you know how we love our two-in-ones) so you’ll have less to pack in your beach bag. It’s also water resistant, non-greasy and moisturizing all at the same time!

From The Inside Out: Drinkable SPF

Can you imagine drinking a bottle of sunscreen? Neither can we….but Harmonized H2O UV Protection ($30) is the closest thing to that. Essentially, you drink 2 ml of the UV water one hour prior to sun exposure and 2 ml every 4 hours thereafter while in the sun. While not topical, the Harmonized H2O will actually work to neutralize UV radiation for sun protection from the inside out. Our advice: pair it with your favorite topical SPF to protect yourself doubly.

Over Makeup

Maybe you’re going to an outdoor event,  a wedding perhaps and you want to protect your face but you really don’t want to mess up your makeup. Well, we’re telling you that you don’t have to. Colorscience makes a Mineral Powder Sun Protection with SPF 50 ($62) that you can apply just like powder over your makeup. The powder comes in three shades (fair, medium and tan) and it’s dispensed from an easy to use brush that you can throw right in your purse so that you can reapply every two hours.

After Sun Exposure

While we’re preaching prevention, we realize that sometimes you may accidentally get a little too much sun. In these cases, we love to use Cool Bum’s Cool Down Hydrating After Sun Lotion ($11.99) is a redness-fighting triple threat with it’s combination of aloe vera, vitamin A, and vitamin E. The cucumber extract binds with water to add moisture back into the skin to prevent peeling and extend your tan. Cocoa butter comes in to soften and ameliorate irritated skin. It’s non-greasy and just the right price making it perfect to use any time in any season!
