You rarely see Katy Perry, Lady Gaga or Taylor Swift with a pimple – but it’s not because they never get them (no matter how great their facialists, nutritionists and ProActive products may be!). It’s because they have men like famed celebrity makeup artist Jake Baily in their corner, who we’re starting to think of as the blemish-banishing fairy godfather! We recently had the opportunity to chat with him about how to cover up a pimple for a flawless complexion like your favorite pop stars.
How Katy Perry, Lady Gaga + Taylor Swift Conceal Pimples
How to pick the best concealer. When covering a pimple, look for an opaque concealer with a dry texture. Unlike an under-eye concealer, which should have a more fluid consistency and lighter coverage like YSL Touche Eclat ($40), the concealer you use to cover a pimple should be thicker, not only for better coverage but also for longer lasting wear. Also, when testing shades, apply them near a window for natural light to see the truest representation of how well the shade matches your skin.
How to conceal a popped pimple. If the pimple has been recently popped or is secreting oils, clean it first with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol and apply a styptic pencil to stop any bleeding.
How to apply foundation and concealer. If you’re going to wear foundation as well as concealer, make sure they match. If you can’t find an exact match, look for a concealer palette, like Josie Maran Argan Blend Concealer ($28), and mix the color yourself. When applying foundation and concealer, always apply the foundation first. It will give you a bit of coverage, slightly concealing the pimple, so you may be able to use less concealer. Once your foundation has been applied, give it a minute to absorb into the skin and blot it with a tissue to absorb any excess oils. (Jake Baily says he prefers Puffs tissues because they’re the softest!)
How to spot conceal a pimple. Most pimples can be covered with a couple taps of concealer with your index finger. Dab a clean index finger in your concealer and tap gently on the pimple. For a larger area, stipple the concealer on with a sponge.
How to set your concealer for longer lasting wear. There’s nothing worse than heading to the bathroom midday to see that your pimple has reared its ugly head after you spent all morning concealing it. To make your concealer last all day, set your foundation and concealer with a translucent powder like Urban Decay Razor Sharp Ultra Definition Finishing Powder ($31)
