There’s no denying it, this winter has been a particularly brutal one. If you’ve spent any amount of time outside recently, it should come as no surprise that we’re stuck in what’s arguably the worst season for our skin (which, need you need further clarification, has left out skin dry, itchy and less than luminous).
Here at The Beauty Bean, we talk about our winter woes all the time and, as a result, we’re getting smarter! Sure, we’re ampingup our moisturizer (and carrying it with us everywhere we go) but we’re also taking it to a whole new level by eating foods that hydrate our skin! Our philosophy: we all have to eat, so why not choose foods that will help us get through the winter days more comfortably too?
The Winter Skin Menu
Drink Up! It’s obvious that keeping your body hydrated is crucial to your skin looking great. Water is key to getting rid of waste and toxins, which are the main cause of dull skin. Drinking up, though, doesn’t have to be boring. Add frozen berries to your glass for a fruity-twist or cucumber slices for a spa-like treat. Plus, fruits, vegetables and tea are water-dense, so snack and drink up!
Get on the Omega Train. Foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids limit water loss in skin cells, keeping you looking and feeling refreshed even as the dehydrating heat pumps through your office and the winter weather sucks out any minute remnants of moisture. They’ll also help soften the appearance of wrinkles and boost your skin’s ability to regenerate. The best part? Omega-3 foods are everywhere! So this tip is easy to incorporate into your daily life just by adding salmon, tuna, olive oil, anchovies, walnuts, almonds and avocado!
Use The Whole Veggie. Silica, an element key for healthy bones and teeth, has also been found to help hydrate your skin and maintain elasticity. And while it’s easily found in fruits and vegetables, often this nutrient gets thrown away because it’s part of the peels of some of the best foods for you. Next time, keep the skin on your cucumber and the string on your celery for a double dose of nutrition.
Make Vitamins Your BFF. In order for your skin to look great, it has to be healthy. Vitamin B helps to restore collagen (a protein that keeps it firm) in the skin, which is especially important as you age. So load up on Vitamin B-full foods like whole grains and protein to keep your skin looking fantastic! Vitamin C also helps with the formation of collagen, and therefore can reduce wrinkles and increase hydratuion, so citri-cize your diet with oranges, strawberries, grapefruits and broccoli.
Limit Junk Food. Foods with refined sugars dehydrate your skin, making it dry and less clear. Combined with the winter elements, loading up on these foods (which can also be high in trans fatty acids and sodium too) will have you feeling the winter blues tenfold. While we don’t advocate cutting them out completely (we all have cravings!), try to naturally reduce how much junk food is in your diet and replace it with more nutritional items.
