With the US Open in full-swing, all of us here at The Beauty Bean have tennis on the mind and, well, when it came time to pick a Real Beauty to feature this week, no one stood out more than Lindsay Davenport, tennis’ long-revered sweetheart.
The former World #1 tennis player (she finished 1998, 2001, 2004 and 2005 as the top ranked player), Lindsay won three Grand Slam singles tournaments (the US Open in 1998, Wimbledon in 1999 and the Australian Open in 2000) and even an Olympic gold medal in singles. But, more than that, she won all of our hearts when she lifted that championship trophy over her head at the 1998 US Open– and it wasn’t just because of her winning record.
Rather, it was Lindsay’s beauty both on and off the court that won us over. As the 2-time winner of the Diamond ACES Award in both 1998 and 1999 for her off-court contributions and as the recipient of the Prix Orange from journalists at Roland Garros in 2000 for being the friendliest and most approachable player on Tour, Lindsay proved her heart to be as solid as her groundstrokes. Not that we were surprised. In fact, we always felt that while it may have been her rock-solid serve that won her matches, it was her poise and inner beauty that won her our love.
So, we sat down with Lindsay Davenport and asked her to weigh in on Real Beauty.
What do you think makes someone beautiful?
A great laugh, an understated elegance.
How do you deal with the pressure for body perfection in our culture?
Hmmm…I have learned to just focus on being healthy and what’s right for you. If you exercise and eat healthy to have a better, more energetic life and not to look good in a certain pair of jeans or be a certain size, then you will have a better outlook.
If you could give your younger self advice about beauty, what would it be?
To be healthier, to stay out of sun when possible, to always wear sunscreen, that being tall is a good thing, and eat more vegetables.
What’s your one, can’t live without beauty product?
Vivite facial products by Allergan.
